Boone received his undergraduate degree in Biophysics at the University of California, Berkeley, and his Ph.D. in Radiological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine.  After faculty positions at the University of Missouri Columbia and the Thomas Jefferson University, he joined the University of California, Davis, in 1992, where he is currently Professor and Vice Chairman of Radiology and Professor of Biomedical Engineering.  Dr. Boone has been chair of Science Council of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) since 2006 and has served on the Research and Development Committee of the Radiological Society of North America since 2008.  He is board certified in diagnostic radiologic physics by the American Board of Radiology, and is a Fellow of the AAPM, of the Society of Breast Imaging, and of the American College of Radiology.  Dr. Boone is the co-author of the widely used textbook Essential Physics of Medical Imaging and has more than 120 peer-reviewed publications and 12 US patents.  His research interests include the development of a dedicated computed-tomography system for breast imaging, radiation dosimetry including Monte Carlo evaluation of radiation dose in mammography and computed tomography, and the development of quantitative metrics for image-quality assessment.  Dr. Boone was elected to the Commission in 2010.
