At the 2009 Annual Meeting of the ICRU in Dresden, Germany, Professor Paul DeLuca was re-elected Chairman but at the same time announced that he had recently accepted the position of Provost and Vice Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Because of the unknown, but anticipated, pressures of work in his new position Prof DeLuca requested that he be allowed to step down as ICRU Chairman until the 2010 Annual Meeting, at which time he would re‑evaluate his position. He recommended that Dr Hans Menzel serve as Acting Chairman for this period. With the agreement of Dr Menzel the Commission unanimously endorsed this proposal and requested that Prof DeLuca continue as a member of the Commission.
As events have unfolded Prof DeLuca has now concluded that he will be unable to assume the Chairmanship for the foreseeable future and the Commission has therefore elected Dr Menzel as its Chairman with immediate effect. Dr Menzel has a record of accomplishments, distinguished service, and leadership with both the European Commission and CERN. He has a profound knowledge of ICRU affairs, having been a member since 1993. He is also a member of the Main Commission of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and Chairman of the ICRP's Committee 2 (Doses from Radiation Exposure). He has provided and will continue to provide an excellent link between ICRU and ICRP as well as other related organizations.
Prof DeLuca has agreed to continue serving the ICRU as a member and act as consultant to Report Committees and on other relevant matters, where his experience and expertise will be invaluable. The Commission would like to thank Prof Deluca for his generous contributions to the ICRU as a member, as Vice Chairman, and as Chairman, and for his willingness to continue to be an active member of the ICRU.
